Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation{PIH}

This is the most dreadful stage of any chemical peel.
PIH is an
acronym for POST INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION.
Post- inflammatory means "after
inflammation." Hyperpigmentation means "increased
pigmentation," or the
darkening of the skin.
So post-
inflammatory
hyperpigmentation, or PIH, is
the discoloration or darkening
of the skin that develops after an inflammatory wound. PIH spots
are darker than the
surrounding skin tissue, and
can vary in color from pink to
red, purple, or brown.

WHO GETS PIH
Hyperpigmentation usually occurs on areas of skin where the
deepest parts of the peel are found. PIH will only affect the areas
of skin that have been treated with a chemical peel (although this
very rare).
Although hyperpigmentation can occur in all skin types, it is
most commonly those with darker skin who are afflicted. This is
because those with a dark skin tone have greater levels of
melanin than those of a lighter complexion. This means that if the
cells that contain melanin are over stimulated, as can happen
after a chemical peel, the production of melanin will be reduced.

How To Avoid PIH
The best way to avoid PIH is PATIENCE.YES.it works! Once you
are on a chemical peel, remember its no water, dont be in a haste
to see fast peeling results. You'l DEFINATLY peel. That u dont
peel in sheets doesnt mean you are not peeling.

LISTEN TO YOUR SKIN.
Once u apply a chem peel and it stings, neutralize immediately.

AVOID FITTED CLOTHINGS.
Its advisable to occulde for faster result, but most fitted wears
causes friction/bruises.

WEAR SUNSCREEN.
After a chemical peel, your skin is susceptible to the sun
our skin becomes suceptible to the sun. The SPF numbers on a
product can range from as low
as 2 to as high as 60.Dont be confused on what number to use,
(lots of argument on high spf/level of sun protection).Make sure
u get a good sunscreen with SPF 30+ and with ACTIVE
INGREDIENT zinc oxide
or titanium dioxide.

How to Treat PIH
No one is extremely perferct with skin care. There are still
chances you'll get a pih(very rare though)after all these.
ALLOW THE SKIN TO HEAL.
Preferably sheabutter, Evoo, castor oil, until skin heals
APPLY LIGHTENERS
Use creams with ingred;kojic acid, aha etc.
DO ANOTHER PEEL
This is simply the best,do another peel this time you are more
experienced,.take your time and watch your PIH fade.
P.s.PIH after a chemical peel could last for up to few months.you
could be lucky it clears faster.
